Best Wireless Earphones in India Buying Guide 2020

It is important to choose a headphone that can let you enjoy your favourite music the way you like it. Choosing a headphone with the right performance isn’t everything though. There are other factors to consider, such as comfort, portability, convenience, design and price. We take a quick look at these features that you must ponder over while selecting the right headphone for you.

Best Headphones in India

Headphones are large products that rest of your head. They have large drivers and are generally preferred by those who appreciate music. They have heavy cushion padding which makes them suitable for prolonged use. There are two types of headphones to choose from, over-ear (circum-aural) and on-ear (supra-aural) headphones. Over-ear headphones are large headphones that cover your ear, when you wear them. They are known to be more comfortable and are usually used indoors.

On-ear headphones are usually smaller than over-ear headphones. They are designed to be carried around easily, and preferred by those who don’t prefer earphones.   Headphones these days also have foldable designs. The design makes them portable enough to be carried around in bags. Almost all on-ear headphones have a foldable design. There aren’t many on-ear headphones that have a foldable design.

If it’s portability you are after, then earphones are the best option for you. Earphones can be easily carried in small pouches or pockets. They are small and light but are still powerful enough to have a loud output.  There are two types of earphones, earbud earphones and canal phones. Earbud headphones have a standard circular, but slightly bulky design. They fit right outside the ear. They are reasonably comfortable to wear but keep falling out most of the time. Canal earphones on the other hand fit right into ear canal and don’t fall out as often. They are more comfortable to wear because of the rubber or silicone coated earbuds.

Earphones are also recommended if you are traveling or playing sports. They are also available in many designs that allow them to fit right in the ear and not pop-out while doing physical tasks, such as jogging or working out.

Types of headphones

In-ear headphones

The first kind of headphones are also the smallest. These are referred to as in-ears/earbuds, and the headphones that came with your phone or mp3 player most likely fall into this category. There are plenty of reasons to buy in-ears over other types of headphones, but their biggest advantage is the fact that they are so easily portable.

Portable. Due to their size and weight, in-ears are the most portable of the three kinds of headphones. You can easily stash them in your pockets when not in use and if that’s too much, even dangling them around your neck isn’t too intrusive.

Noise isolation. Earbuds tend to have excellent noise isolation since they get placed directly in your ear. If you’re not sure exactly what noise isolation is, we go more into detail in this guide.

Great for exercise. This kind of ties back into portability but goes a step further. Earbuds are pretty much the headphones of choice when it comes to working out. Sure people still use other kinds of headphones, but these are by far the most popular because of how lightweight they are.

Sound Quality. For the most part, sound isn’t the strong point of earbuds particularly in the low end. Larger headphones are able to reproduce a more pleasing sound simply because they’re able to . Bigger drivers generally means better sound, and earbuds use tiny drivers to maintain their portable form factor.

Wires get easily tangled. Again, this doesn’t apply to all in-ears, but for the most part the wires get tangled all the time. Like, all the time and it can be really annoying.

On-ear headphones

As as the name suggests, on-ear headphones sit directly on the ear itself. They are similar to over ear models, but smaller. This style of headphones are ideal for people who find in-ear models uncomfortable. Because they are a bit smaller than over-ears, on-ear headphones can also be ideal for travelers or people needing headphones that will pack down to a more compact size. Beats by Dre makes a great pair of on-ear headphones that fold down to about half their size, and Monster has some excellent options too.

Also portable. Though they’re not as easy to stuff in your pocket as in-ears are, these are also fairly portable. They’re usually for people who want a step up in sound quality, but don’t want anything too big or bulky. Many of them also have hinges that help them fold to half of their original footprint.

Bigger batteries. Along with a bigger size comes more room to fit a larger capacity battery. The more listening time, the better.

Better sound. These aren’t intended to fit in your pocket, so many on-ears use larger drivers which provide better overall sound.

Harder to carry. Yes, on-ears are still portable but they’re not as portable as earbuds. Throwing them in a backpack is easy, but good luck trying to stash them in your jacket pocket.

Not the best noise isolation. Because they sit on your ear and not in or around them, they usually allow some outside noise to enter.

Over-ear headphones

Over-ear headphones tend to be the largest headphones out there, and quite often they provide outstanding audio quality. This is due in part to the ability to include much more extensive hardware into the design.

Over-ear headphones can also be extraordinarily comfortable for many listeners, since they don’t invade your ear canal, and they aren’t pressing on the outside of your ear either, and often come with soft padding and ultra smooth fabric or leather wrapping on the ear cup. These are also great for commuters who want to block out the world at the end of along day.

Best sound. Again, this isn’t always the case, but in general large over-ears tend to sound the best because they have the largest drivers in the ear cups. Some manufacturers lean into the bulkiness, and create headphones that are built for sound quality above all other concerns.

Biggest batteries. Noticing a trend here? It all comes back to size. Having more real estate to work with gives manufacturers the freedom to stuff large batteries in these to make them last a long time.

Comfort. Larger ear cups mean more even weight distribution. Additionally, many manufacturers take advantage of the size to add materials such as memory foam, leatherette, and velour.

Hardest to carry. Since they’re larger, over-ears tend to be more difficult to carry. Some come with carrying cases to protect them during travel, but they’re still not nearly as easy to carry around as the other two types of headphones.

Price. This varies depending on how good any given pair of headphones actually are but since over-ears tend to have the best sound quality, they also tend to be the most expensive.

Power. While this is an extremely rare issue, sometimes the high-end headphones you buy require the use of an amp. This is generally reserved for enthusiasts and headphones that are extremely specialized.

Bluetooth headphones

Wireless listening. Get your headphone cable caught on things all the time? Bluetooth headphones don’t have that issue.

Sound quality is better than it was 5 years ago.Bluetooth codecs If you have an up-to-date phone, have come a long way in the last few years. Even so much as to be able to compete in quality to some wired headsets. Of course, both your phone and your headphones have to support the same standards, so be sure to research this before you buy.

Battery. Where you once could listen without having yet another thing to charge, now your headphones rely on a battery. It’s a pain with the smaller form-factor items like truly wireless earbuds, but the larger the headphones, the better battery life you typically get.

Wireless signals have inherent weaknesses. Wireless listening is all cool and good, but you may notice that sometimes you suffer from interference. It’s becoming more and more rare, but it can still happen.

Compatibility. While the whole sound quality issue is in a far better place than it used to be, issues can still remain when you don’t have equipment that can talk to each other. Newer headphones will have trouble with older phones, and older headphones generally don’t support decent codecs like aptX and LDAC.

Wired vs. Wireless headphones

One of the first choices you’ll make is to purchase a wired set of headphones, or to go wireless.

All about Wired headphones

Wired headphones have several advantages; they never need to be recharged, as they simply connect to your smartphone or device using an AUX jack. They’re often less expensive too.

But wired headphones also have their downsides. Since they come with a cable, it can often get tangled, twisted or caught up in things like the seat arm on a plane, for example. Wired headphones also aren’t ideal with some newer smartphones that have eliminated the AUX jack, since you’ll need an adapter to connect them.

But if you don’t mind being physically connected to your device and your budget is lower, there’s still many great wired options out there.

All about Wireless headphones

There are two kinds of wireless headphones: truly wireless and what you might call semi-wireless.

Wireless or semi-wireless headphones?

Semi-wireless headphones, also referred to as simply “wireless,” usually have a cable connecting one ear bud to the other. They do not, however, require a connector cable to get audio from your smartphone or tablet.

The benefits of semi-wireless headphones (brands like Skullcandy, Jabra and even Fitbit are good picks in this category) is that they sometimes have longer lasting batteries, and may have larger audio drivers, since these can be hidden inside the cables or controls within the cables. Semi-wireless headphones are often less expensive than truly wireless versions, and some people think they perform better in terms of connectivity. Semi wireless headphones are often slightly smaller in size and weight than their truly wireless cousins.

Recharging usually requires connecting the headphones to a cable for recharging; another small accessory to keep track of.

What are truly wireless headphones?

Truly wireless headphones have no wires whatsoever connecting them to each other, or to your device. They offer the ultimate in cord-free freedom. They can operate individually or in stereo, and they’re usually super small and highly portable, and most often have a charging case that comes with them (examples of this include Sony, Bose, Jabra, Apple) which can hold additional charges, vastly expanding battery life on the go.

Headphone Fit & styles

Headphone fit is a very personal choice. Where some people love a huge over-ear, all encompassing fit, others prefer a slimmer, in-ear design. There are the choices you’ll make when it comes to fit.

Earbuds & in-ear headphones

Earbuds or in-ear headphones are the smallest headphones you’ll find. That’s precisely because they are designed to fit either in your ear concha (the cup outside your ear canal), or into your ear canal.

There are several benefits to earbuds or in-ear headphones. For starters, they can be quite inexpensive (though truly wireless versions of these will be pricier). They also have the advantage of blocking out a good deal of external noise. Because they seal off part of your ear canal from outside sounds, you will get less sound bleed-through.

Many in-ear headphones also come with a variety of ear tips, fins, and wings. This allows you to get a precise and customized fit. This can have the added advantage of giving your a better sound experience, since there’s no outside noise to distract you.

Also, when the ear tips wear out or become soiled, you have the advantage of easily being able to swap them out.

Things To Consider Before Buying Best Wireless Earphones in India

Cables, Connectivity

One of the things to look for in earphones and headphone is the length of the cable. Earphones are meant to be used outdoors, so they usually have a somewhat short cable, somewhere in the 1 to 1.5 metres range. On the other hand, headphones are meant to be used indoors and therefore have a longer cable. Some headphones come with 3 metre cables. The cable on a headset needs to be strong. Some headsets also come with tangle free cables. These cables have a flat design that does not get tangled easily, even when you keep the earphones stuffed inside your pocket.

Some headphones have detachable cables. This is a really nice feature to have if you plan on travelling with your headphones. These cables can be detached from the headphone body and then reattached when needed. Almost all headphones come with a 3.5mm jack. This can be used with almost any media player, such as your MP3 player, tablet, PC and smartphone. Some studio headphones also come with a 6.3mm plug adaptor, in the box. The 6.3mm adaptor will let you connect your headphones to devices such an AV receiver or a high-quality source such as a CD player or headphone amplifier.

If you prefer using wireless headphones, look for Bluetooth-enabled ones. These headphones can connect to your smartphones and tablets and let you listen to music without going through the trouble of tangled cables.

Noise cancellation

It’s often the background noise that doesn’t let you enjoy your music and movies on your headphones. It is a huge problem, especially for those who fly often. For such people, it is better to consider buying noise-cancelling headphones. These headphones have a built-in mic that cancels out background noise. These headphones require powered, and they get this by a lithium-ion or alkaline battery. Noise-cancelling headphones are generally a bit more expensive.

If you don’t prefer noise-cancelling headphones, but want to get rid of the loud background noise, then look good noise isolation headphones. These headphones block out ambient noise from, by just the construction of the headphones. They aren’t as effective as noise cancelling headphones, but they do considerably reduce the background noise and they’re affordable as well. You can consider closed headphones that are specifically designed to isolate you from the background noise. Canal earphones are considered to isolate noise better than standard in- ear headphones.

Noise Isolation vs. Active Noise Cancellation

This is one of those things that sound similar, but mean very different things. Noise isolation just means that the product physically sits between your ear and outside sound, thus blocking outside noise from entering your ear.

Active noise cancellation (ANC) works differently, though the end goal is the same. Products with ANC have tiny microphones in them that pick up outside sounds. The headphones then produce the opposite sound wave in order to actively cancel out the unwanted noise. It’s all based on physics and wave properties so as you can imagine, it’s not an easy thing to accomplish. When headphones claim noise cancelling we usually give their effectiveness a mention in our full reviews because it varies from product to product.

Frequency Response

This is the spec that tells you the range of sound that the product is capable of producing measured in Hertz (Hz). If you look on the box of any audio product this number is usually around 20Hz – 20,000Hz, with the first number representing the lowest frequency and the second representing the highest. This number varies depending on the product, but for reference, humans can only hear between 20Hz – 20,000Hz which is why that’s the range most products aim for.

Some people say that products that produce sound above or below those frequencies are pointless, but that’s not necessarily the case. Sure, you won’t be able to hear those extreme frequencies unless you’re a bat, but when products have a slightly wider frequency response, l5Hz – 25,000Hz for example, it gives the sounds at the two extreme ends a little more room to breathe. In other words, what you can hear will sound a little better. That said, most people can’t even hear the difference if they’re looking for it, so it’s not the most important aspect of headphones to the average consumer.

There’s also the problem that no headphones on the market output each frequency at the same volume as all the others. Every set of headphones out there will emphasize certain notes over others, and that will have consequences for your music. Sometimes it will make things sound less clear, or it will all but mute some of the instruments in a song. These are things you can’t divine from a number on a spec sheet.

Controls, microphone & other things to keep in mind

Some headphones and earphones come with a microphone built in. Headphones with microphones are typically used by gamers while playing multiplayer games. Earphones with microphones are meant to be used with phones and tablets with calling features. Most of these have a button to let you pick up incoming calls. This a great feature to have especially when you’re travelling. Similarly, some earphones and headphones also come with volume controls, so you can adjust the volume in an instant.

Headphones can deliver a truly entertaining experience, so you’re likely to be wearing headphones for long periods of time. Comfort is an important component of a headphone purchasing decision. If you are planning to travel a lot, then it’s important to look for a headphone that comes with a case. Also, look for the warranty provided for the headphones. There are some manufacturers that will provide you with a two year replacement warranty. After purchasing the headphone, you can try and experiment with all kinds of new genres and bands from sites such as last.fm.

Price range

The second thing to decide is how much you want to spend on a Bluetooth headphone. You can get wireless headphones for as low as Rs 999 going all the way to over Rs 50,000. Keep in mind that you can get each type of headphones across price range.

Some of the good brands to consider include Boat, Leaf, Tagg, Mivi in the entry range whereas for mid-range you can get good options from JBL, Samsung, Skullcandy, Sony and Sennheiser. If you don’t mind spending larger sum
